Quote for the Day:

But of course, there are other perspectives on the whole phenomenon, beginning with the long-run assertion that there was nothing new about close links between the City of London and landed society. The copper merchant and Bank of England director Charles Pascoe Grenfell (1790-1867) married the daughter of the Earl of Sefton; while his son Charles William (1823-61), elder brother of Henry, married the granddaughter of the second Earl of Harewood. One has only to examine the composition of the Phoenix Assurance board from 1840 to see there a strong cluster of City merchants and others whose fathers had actually had country seats. Nor, in terms of the accelerated integration that undoubtedly did take place in the late nineteenth century, should one be naive about the process.

Yes, we've been here before, many times before.

The City is kind of a special case, since it's exempted by both law and charter from ever having the books opened by Parliament or any other regulatory agency in the UK. It's why it remains a prime place for crooks from El Chapo to Putin to launder their dirty money into accounts in tax havens across the planet.

I'm convinced that's why Russia was so keen on having Brexit passed. The financial wizards in Brussels were sniffing around a little too closely to The City and were making Putin and his vassals nervous.
