It is because it is not newsworthy generally.

Women hit men all the time, but it is not considered an issue until a man hits a woman back. THEN all the shit hits the fans.

And it does not matter if it is a light hit (proportionate) or not. The very act of a man hitting a woman even in defense or as a reaction is so serious and I can only conclude that that itself is a vestige of a sexist attitude similar to "women and children first".

Like MLK, Jr said, violence begets violence. Some people don't seem to be able to figure this out. Hell, even some DUers don't see anything wrong with adults hitting children or children hitting each other.
