But there is a fairly long history of the engagement ring as a form of collateral in other societies.

But I'm fairly certain the diamond and their hyped value is not too far off. In fact I think the whole industry behind the ceremonial aspect of weddings is commercialized to the point of lunacy.

My girlfriend can't even contemplate the wedding her Disney retiree parents would subject her to. Since the time she was 8 or 9 her parents have told her if she wants to get married at Sleeping Beauty's castle... they can make it happen.
