Can anyone explain why many DU avatar pics are "blank" in my browser?
This started fairly recently, and I'm thinking it was either a browser update or a change at DU. Many but not all DU avatars show up with the "broken picture" icon in my browser. I'm using Firefox 134.0, and I have some security add-ons (uBlock Origin, NoScript, Ghostery). Even with the add-ons, things used to work fine at DU. My own avatar graphic shows up OK.

(491 posts)I use FF and Brave, and most avatar pics now show the broken image icon. Actually a week ago I had a lot of broken image icons, but today its probably 90% or more.

I'm not seeing this but have from time to time in the past.

(17,663 posts)In my case I think it's my very old computer and Chrome doing some kind of operation in which it conserves power or space by not displaying some images. It does this on other websites too. But then it will display everything most of the time. It's kind of puzzling.
I'm not sure if it's the same reason for what you are experiencing though.

(2,591 posts)...or what Firefox now calls "browser history" or something. (I first logged out of DU, cleared the cache, and then restarted Firefox). There are several options for how complete a job you want done, and I selected everything except the option for site settings/forms/etc. It looks like avatar graphics are visible again.
Thanks!

(742 posts)On my desktop, it is black, as in a black flag of mourning for our country under T****.
Unfortunately, on my phone, it shows up as a white box in dark mode.

(742 posts)I didn't notice the 'broken' icon. Maybe a better metaphor for the country than my black one.

(107,251 posts)may be the problem. Cleared cache, checked for ad-blocker impacts or other security software issues and nope. There is something blocking the connection.

(2,591 posts)You'll want to check to see what options your browser has for clearing things. I remember the days when there was just a "clear cache" button, and that was it. Firefox now has like five or six options regarding how much stuff you want nuked. I chose to clear everything just short of a complete reset (everything except site settings/forms/etc.). I first logged out of DU, cleared the cache (what is now called "browser history" or something), and then restarted Firefox. That worked for me.
Are you on a desktop computer/laptop/etc. or are you on a smartphone/tablet? Because I don't have much experience at all with the latter devices, only having a burner phone myself.

(107,251 posts)what you described and I am seeing your paperclip avatar--which I wasn't on either your or another's posts using the same. So, it may be fixed. I hope so. It is SOOOO distracting to see that fragmented image box. Thanks for the suggestions!
OOps on edit, your paperclip is gone again and the same problem... darn!

(2,591 posts)...for sites where my security add-ons mess things up really badly. I'm not real happy about that, because I have left my version of Chrome pretty much unsecured, with no add-ons. (Actually, I'm running Chromium, which is a version of Chrome with the Google spyware stripped out of it). But it's really lame that in 2025, some web-shites still exist where security add-ons make it impossible for the site to function.
Anyway, you may have fixed the problem now. I had to clear almost everything from my browser to get things back to normal. It looks like all the avatar graphics are displaying properly for me at the moment.

(2,591 posts)Though at least for a few of us, it can be (temporarily?) fixed by logging out, clearing the browser cache, and restarting the app.

Interesting, I can't see them when perusing posts, but if I try to respond to your post, it shows up. Then after posting and seeing the thread again, it is gone. Very strange.

(28,586 posts)Weird thing, I couldn't see your avatar in the thread, but I can while I'm replying to you.
Edit: It disappeared again when I went back to the thread.

(2,591 posts)...like it originates at DU. So far, what I did earlier (logging out, clearing the browser cache, and restarting the app) continues to work for me. However, I'm left to wonder if this bug will eventually return.
