UPDATE: Just gonna get a new HD. Thx all! n/t

Running Windows 7 and getting hard disk failure message.

Updates were just automatically downloaded late Tuesday night (I thought I had that disabled) and since then I'm getting a Windows Detects hard disk error (or something like that) message. I've restarted a few times and it always pops up.

Everything is backed up. I ran both scandisk and chkdsk and no errors turned up. Other than the error message, the computer is functioning just fine.

Any suggestions?

and install a newer version of windows before restoring your data. XP is no longer supported and you will run into troubles. I looked it up. End of life was April 2014 so microsoft is no longer pushing security updates to it.

You already tried the chkdsk (2nd solution), so maybe sfc (1st solution) is worth a try...

It's actually trial-ware but will continue to work after the trial with just a nag screen.
