Any ideas why Twitter videos on this site have suddenly stopped playing on my machine?
I use Firefox as my main browser, and I click the play button and the video disappears--never plays, nothing re-appears in its frame. Some settings my have changed recently, but I couldn't tell you which ones. I have had trouble getting audio/video feeds from sites like Zoom. So I've played with various settings trying to get that to work.
They will play on Chrome, but not on Firefox. Any ideas/suggestions? I really don't want to use Chrome a lot.
Update: youtube videos play fine.

(26,039 posts)Only I just didn't think of asking for help from DU. Thanks for doing that. Appreciate it. Now I just hope someone will tell the both of us what the problem is and how to fix it.

(5,637 posts)One of the filter sets was blocking Twitter feeds. I disabled that one and things work now.
The one that was killing them was "Fanboy's Annoyance List". As soon as I disabled that one everything started working normally. Pull down AdBlock Plus from the menubar and select "Options" and check to see if you have that set enabled.

(1,952 posts)I rarely use Firefox but spent a minute and reproduced the problem. Since I don't use Firefox often, it took the opportunity to brag to me about having blocked some sort of cross-site tracking with it's "Enhanced Tracking Protection." I'm all in favor of blocking cross-site tracking, but it seems to break watching Twitter videos (and animated GIFs) that are linked to by DU.
To fix ...
0) Go to a web page on DU that has a broken video
1) click on the shield symbol to the left of the address bar. You should see a popup window with "Enhanced Tracking Protection" at the top .. including a small toggle button to enable/disable it.
2) Toggle the switch at the top of the panel (turn it off).
This will allow cross-site tracking when Twitter is used from DU. Toggle it back on to revert to being protected.
Btw, the page will reload automatically when you hit the switch, but I had to do additional reloads before it worked.
Disclaimer: this worked for me, once, on a Mac running the current macOS. Your milage may vary.
