Related: About this forumHow involved was Carolyn McCarthy in the 2022 NY-3rd and NY-4th CD US House Elections?
The reason why I am bringing up Carolyn McCarthy is that McCarthy got elected to the US House from NY-4th CD(SW Nassau County) in 1996 by unseating a Republican incumbent US House member Dan Frisa who voted against the ban on assault weapons. Back then McCarthy was a nurse from Mineola whose husband and son were victims of the 1993 LIRR massacre.
McCarthy served in the US House for 18 years. During McCarthys tenure, She was a very popular. McCarthy would have help the Democratic nominee in NY-4. NY-3 would have made a difference had the Long Island Press(Newsday/NY Times) disclosed information about their investigation of George Santos.
The Republicans won NY-3 and NY-4 by reminding voters that they are tough on crime. Democrats need to remind voters that perjury(Lying) is a crime and not supporting a ban on assault weapons or a background check on individuals who want to buy guns does not make you tough on crime.
Carolyn McCarthys son Kevin McCarthy survived while her husband Dennis McCarthy did not.

(8,976 posts)When she retired from the House she was not in good health. She must be in her 80s now and if still alive, she would be a cancer survivor.

(8,976 posts)She looked old and frail when she left Congress. I would have, and I guess did guess that she was older than that.

(8,976 posts)As a former US Attorney and DA, Congresswoman Rice could have been instrumental in reminding the voters that Democrats too can be tough on crime when warranted.
