Bad news about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) from Canada. Bob Weber from the Canadian News staff reports in Spreading wildlife disease threatens deer, elk and maybe humans, new research says:
And soon-to-be-published research on chronic wasting disease has raised new fears about whether the illness could infect humans.
I would say this question was answered with 'yes,' said Hermann Schaetzl, a veterinary scientist at the University of Calgary.
Schaetzl's work was discussed in a recent report from the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute, which advises the federal government on agriculture policy. Earlier this month, the institute concluded that in addition to human health concerns, the disease's spread over the last decade threatens Western Canada's agriculture, wildlife and food security.

(7,631 posts)Homo Sapien development and explotation of the planet resources will lead to extinction. No large scale extraterrestrial event is required.
Religious radicals in possession of nuclear warheads will hasten our demise. Combine that with the destruction of the environment leads to extinction.
Since 99.9% of all species on Earth to ever have existed are now extinct, the odds are not in our favor. Anyone thinking otherwise is being arrogant and willfully ignorant.
Attached, these aren't scientific papers, but interesting reading nonetheless.
Global HEATING due to burning trillions of tons of carbon, PLAYERS of weapons of mass destruction just ICHING to be used by some, and the destruction of our oceans, arable land, and diminishing water resources spell DOOM for our species.
It won't be now, but it won't last the next 500,000 years either.

(7,631 posts)500K years in evolutionary time is a blink of an eye.
Since Homo Sapiens have existed for about 200,000 years, and our oldest common ancestor is around 4.7 Million years,
SOON is but a fraction of Earth's lifespan.
Neither one of us will be around to watch the destruction, but you can rest assured that destruction will come.
