Sheriff Scott Matheny (R) not running for re-election

Sheriff Scott Matheny announced Friday that he is not running for re-election this year.

“Being your Sheriff has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he wrote in a press release. “Law enforcement isn’t just about enforcing the law, it’s about building relationships, earning respect, and being there when people need you most.”

Matheny has worked at the Sheriff’s Office for four decades. He was hired in the mid-1980s by then-Sheriff Spike Hladky.

“I didn’t know then just how much this role would shape my life, my values and my understanding of what it truly means to serve a community,” Matheny said. “God puts people in places that only he knows, and I have learned to trust him, lean on him and guide me.
