Madison's 2026 elections for local offices draw few candidates so far

Madison’s first elections of 2026 are shaping up to be rather quiet, but that landscape could shift in the next two weeks if more candidates jump in.

Nine of 10 Madison City Council seats, one of two Madison School Board seats and most Dane County Board seats up for election in April are currently on track to be uncontested races.

The only contested City Council race might be District 8, which represents neighborhoods near the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ald. MGR Govindarajan represents that district now but has filed noncandidacy papers.

So far, Bobby Gronert and Ellen Zhang have filed paperwork to compete for the open seat. If three or more people qualify for the ballot, the top two vote-getters would advance from a Feb. 17 primary to the April 7 general election.
