Madison City Council member won't run again, but her husband will

Residents of Madison's District 7 won't be represented on the City Council by Ald. Nasra Wehelie after the spring election, but they might elect someone very close to her.

Wehelie officially declared her noncandidacy for re-election in documents filed with the city clerk's office. Instead, her husband, political newcomer Abdirahman Siad, filed to run for the spot representing the west side.

In a city blog post Thursday, Wehelie discussed her decision not to run and emphasized milestones from her four years as an alder, including the Country Grove Park Development, Manchester Park Pathway, and her work in equity and economic development.

“This decision was not made lightly, as serving you and the city of Madison has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Wehelie wrote.
