How lawmakers see the stakes in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race

Wisconsin is gearing up for another blockbuster race in April — an election that will decide the ideological makeup of the state’s highest court, either cementing a liberal majority or returning power to conservative justices.

The battle was sparked when left-leaning Justice Ann Walsh Bradley announced last year that she will retire after 30 years on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

State lawmakers see big stakes in the election, with the court set to issue decisions related to hotly contested areas of policy including abortion access, legislative power and environmental regulations.

Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said he’s tired of seeing the same issues brought before the court with every shift in its ideological balance.
