Melissa Agard (D) and Steinhafels salesman vie for Dane County executive

Dane County Executive Melissa Agard is facing a challenger in the April 1 election for the county’s top role — a candidate who didn’t run in the fall special election.

Stephen Ratzlaff filed his declaration of candidacy Jan. 6, saying his campaign is based on a single issue of lowering property taxes.

Agard won November’s special election to finish out the final months of Joe Parisi’s term after his early retirement last spring.

Having spent 13 years in the role, Parisi’s departure left an open field for who would lead the county. His vacancy drew four candidates into the race, with nonprofit leader Dana Pellebon and Agard, a state senator at the time, advancing through the August primary.
