Its the season of renewal! The cherry blossoms and tulips are in bloom, the weather is getting warmer, and the days are getting longer. That also means that our annual Spring Fundraising Gala, one of our favorite NPI traditions, is right around the corner.
Today, were delighted to announce that our special guest at this years gala will be former Governor Jay Inslee, who admirably served the people of Washington in the Legislature, Congress, and as the states chief executive for many decades.
During Inslees three terms as governor, we enacted the Climate Commitment Act, the capital gains tax on the wealthy that funds the Education Legacy Trust, and legislation from NPI to repeal Tim Eymans push polls and require fiscal impact disclosures in ballot measure titles, along with two transportation packages, housing reforms, and a school seismic safety grant program. We also created and funded the WA Cares Fund. And we followed the science during the COVID-19 pandemic, which saved a lot of lives.
It took patient leadership and sustained courage to begin steering Washington away from austerity, greed, and the politics of exclusion in the wake of the Great Recession. Under Governor Inslee, we finally began making real strides in tackling problems like the climate crisis, a housing shortage, an inequitable tax code, lack of access to healthcare, and the abuse of the peoples direct democracy powers by bad actors.
