Macy's to close 3 Seattle-area stores as part of 'Bold New Chapter'

Macy's (NYSE: M) is closing three longtime Seattle-area stores as part of its companywide shift to boost profitability.

The retailer announced Thursday that its department stores at the Puyallup and Kitsap malls are among the 66 locations that will close this year, citing poor performance. The chain's furniture store in Redmond will also close.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” CEO and Chairman Tony Spring said in a news release.

The news comes as department store giants across the country, including Nordstorm, have struggled to drive sales in recent years amid changing shopping trends and increased competition from the likes of Amazon. In 2020, Macy's closed its near-century-old downtown Seattle store, in addition to its Burlington location. The company's Northgate store closed the previous year.

in the visual display dept. Over the course of the 3 years I worked there we must have been told 5 times that they were closing, then they'd say, "We're not closing". This BS went on and on and on. When the store finally did close my coworker and I sang, "Springtime for Hitler". We hated the corporate CEOs who played with people's lives during a huge recession. It was torture.

After it closed I decided to train for a new profession which had a union...and I did just that and was a union rep for my school site.
