Strange atmospheric conditions are making the planes at National Airport much louder

than usual this morning, as heard from central Alexandria. I can't explain what's causing that.

Is it cold there? Sound travels farther in dense, cold air.

It's hazy and overcast. I live about five miles from National Airport, and I'm used to the planes. They start up at about 5:45, and I just don't notice them. Today is different. It must be the wind direction, the relative humidity, the air pressure -- I don't know. I've got a barometer inside that's showing about 30.1 inches of mercury.
