Rutland committee seeks to update city charter to prevent future write-in elections

RUTLAND, Vt. — Rutland's Board of Aldermen is looking to update the city charter to prevent another write-in election from determining the city's mayor.

Members from the Charter and Ordinance Committee said they are in the early stages of seeking a charter change. After their first meeting earlier this week, it's clear not all members are on the same page.

Rutland city officials are looking into changing the city's charter when it comes to election procedures. This comes after the city held a write-in mayoral election on Town Meeting Day because the former mayor announced his resignation after the deadline for candidates to get on the ballot closed.

While the unique election was confusing for some voters, city officials said they believe in the end, the election ran smoothly.
