Gov. Abbott responds after congressman says Guard 'embedded' with ICE

Gov. Greg Abbott’s office and the Texas Military Department confirmed that the Texas National Guard has been authorized to assist with immigration enforcement, after U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro said guard members were operating inside ICE facilities in Texas.

Castro, a San Antonio Democrat, said Texas National Guard members are “embedded” at Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, including the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, one of only two detention centers in the country that hold families with children.

State officials had not previously addressed the guard’s role at ICE facilities. Their confirmation followed Castro’s public remarks and inquiries from the San Antonio Express-News.

Castro said he first learned of the guard’s presence from sources who were not authorized to speak publicly. He said he later confirmed the information with ICE personnel during visits to the facilities.
