Tennessee gun nuts have gone nuttier

A new bill introduced in Tennessee aims to prohibit healthcare providers from asking Tennesseans if they own, possess or have access to a firearm, ammunition or accessories.

HB 0387, if passed, would fine healthcare providers $1,000 if they inquired about firearm ownership.

It was introduced by Rep. Ed Butler (R-Rickman), who’s sponsored bills around education, taxes and infectious disease so far in the 114th General Assembly.

The bill prohibits a healthcare provider from:

Inquiring as to the patient’s ownership, possession of, or access to firearm ammunition or firearm accessories.
Requiring information described above to be disclosed before providing treatment to the patient.
Denying future treatment of a patient based upon a patient’s ownership or control of a firearm, firearm ammunition, or firearm accessories.
Entering, or have another entering, information described above into a patient’s record unless the information is relevant to the patient’s medical care or safety or the safety of others.
Sharing the information described above with an insurer.
