SC Supreme Court to hear oral arguments next month in 2023 Atlantic Beach mayoral election dispute

ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — South Carolina’s top court in April will take up oral arguments related to the contested 2023 mayoral election in Atlantic Beach.

Docket information shows proceedings are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on April 21 in Columbia, and judges are being asked to decide whether trial courts erred in upholding the Municipal Election Commission’s certification.

On Nov. 9, 2023, mayoral candidate Josephine Isom filed a protest of election results after counted provisional ballots showed her losing to John David, 65-64 after being up by 18 votes when polls closed two nights earlier.

The town’s election commission decided six months later to hold a new election, which Isom protested over 19 provisional ballots. She eventually dropped challenges against five of them.
