Roselle Dems oust an incumbent

In the Democratic primary in Roselle’s 1st Ward, Councilwoman Isabel Souza lost to Cynthia Atkins, 230-136. Atkins is a two-term school board member and Kean University official.

In the 3rd Ward, Mario Cornejo Dominguez defeated Cecilia Dallis-Ricks, 229-187. The 3rd Ward seat has been vacant since January, when Cynthia Johnson won an at-large seat and resigned.

Atkins and Cornejo Dominguez ran with the backing of the local Democratic organization run by Atkins’ husband, Reginald Atkins, a former assemblyman and interim mayor.

Roselle is a solidly Democratic town; Kamala Harris won it by 56 points in 2024.
