It is quite an satisfying exercise to get the wood from the ground and stacked under my deck.

I've lived in one form of suburban hell or another for the past 30 years and have never owned a wood fireplace.

I see a lot of wood chopping on TV and in the movies and it looks like fun exercise. Maybe I'd get sick of it if I had to do it?

I'd cut them to 18" lengths, then split, using a hydraulic splitter. Not any more....

Shared around the village, it was made by a paper mill worker and was beautifully calibrated. Now I get the wood delivered already split. I miss it.

There aren't a whole lot of wood suppliers in Central Maine, so they all seem to track close to the price of oil. I'll be paying about the same for a fill up - 220 gal.

A pulp cord is like the gentleman said: 4x4x8ft. (paper mills etc.) ...and equals 3 face cords.
A face cord is 4ft H /8ft L and 16" wide. (ppl who heat with wood)


I order a 10 pulp cord load (30 face cords) of 100" Oak logs about every 3-4 or so years.
Usual cost $700- $1k dep on specie, dryness, and usability.
Otherwise I can get a $20 permit and harvest from the National forest right
across the street. With an ATV and a trailer it's ALOT of work.

I usually use 6-8 face cords per winter to heat 1500sqft.

I've been doing it for over 15 years now, keeps me in shape and is very zen type work.

2-1/2 pulp cords is ~7-1/2 face cords or about a winter's worth!
So yeah 2-1/2 cords is a serious day's work and I applaud anybody
who can do that AND clean the flue in a day! I hate ladders!!

At 65 I'll stick with doing a face cord in an afternoon and crack a beer promptly after! lolz
