(430 posts)I agree with the op, this term was a direct reference in the poll question.

Go vote no in the poll.

(1,160 posts)It is my belief that the term 'Illegal' is frequently employed by the rightwing media as a divisive term to manufacture hate

(288 posts)When many themselves will say they are here illegally? I am being genuine when I ask this. That has never made sense worrying about the semantics.
Alien is actually the offensive word because it dehumanizes and indicates they dont belong. But being in this country illegally doesnt seem like a terrible word and its always bothered me that my side gets so offended..
What this administration is doing by going after non-violent people with no criminal record (or very minor) is outrageous and anti-Christian and un-American. Especially those that are obeying the law through the proper protocol of immigration requirements (asylum, appearing at their hearings, being documented, etc?) is merely Steven Millers sick attempt to whiten this country and punish blue states.
That is what is offensive. The poll from my home state still has 40% in favor of this tyrannical policy after everything they have seen since Dear Leader invaded the streets of Los Angeles. This is not just offensive but its a cancer that conservatives created.

(1,160 posts)Please employ the search engine (DuckDuckGo, Google, etc.) of your choice: Is the term "illegal" considered offensive?

(288 posts)Please define what is undocumented and how a person becomes undocumented?
You dont want to argue this, even though Im being sincere and wanted to know why you personally were so offended not what Google says. You obviously have a very strong opinion of this since you made such a point in this thread.

(36,943 posts)Most southern migrants are legal asylum seekers. Calling them illegals is indeed a right wing talking point so ubiquitous that it's broadly accepted as true, demonstrating that if you tell a lie often enough people will believe it without question.
If they were indeed illegal, there would be no reason to imprison them-- they could be deported under removal orders in short order. There would be no reason to offer them bribes to "self deport" ahead of any potential removal order, or to hold them until removal orders can be obtained. Under previous admins, asylum seekers were regularly given aid and immigration hearing orders by CBP, then released (because they're not illegal).

(288 posts)I looked up the stats, and it says, according to the Google, (as I was told to seek), asylum seekers are only 5% at the border. Not sure what the total is for non-border incidents. So what do we call those not on the asylum path or not cleared to be here called?
I think the left and the right get it wrong and make it more challenging than it needs to be. That is why I do feel there needs to be a separate classification for those not playing by the rules and those that are following the process. Not alien, not illegal, not all are asylum claims, not really an immigrant because it blurs the line with those who are not under the radar. Undocumented are committing a civil crime but its not a serious one like a felony so that also needs nuance.
Until I hear a better idea, i think I will stick with immigrant(s) here illegally. That provides separation because there are plenty of legal immigrants that deserve to be acknowledged and not lumped in with illegal activity. That would be offensive to paint that broad brush.
But I am glad you were at least trying to answer.
