Trump doubles down on support for Gonzalez in high-stakes Miami runoff

MIAMI, Fla. — President Donald Trump issued another ringing endorsement Sunday for Republican Emilio T. Gonzalez in the Miami mayoral runoff, urging voters to “storm the polls” and deliver a victory for his “fantastic” candidate just one day before the Dec. 9 election.

“Miami’s mayor race is Tuesday. It is a big and important race!! Vote for Republican Gonzalez. He is FANTASTIC! You can also vote today. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The endorsement comes amid a fiercely contested nonpartisan race that has drawn national attention as a bellwether for Republican strength in South Florida. Gonzalez, a retired Air Force colonel and former Miami city manager, faces Democratic Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins in the runoff after neither candidate secured a majority in the Nov. 4 first round.

The race serves as the runoff to replace term-limited Republican Mayor Francis Suarez and comes after Trump flipped Miami-Dade County red in the 2024 presidential election, the first Republican win there since 1988. A Gonzalez victory could further solidify GOP gains in the region.
