DeSantis said he talked to Trump amid fight with legislators on immigration laws

Lawmakers are proposing to transfer much of DeSantis’ immigration oversight authority to Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson.

In a private call with a group of supporters on Monday night, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he talked to President Donald Trump and his advisers as he tries to get support for his version of a state immigration proposal over a dueling proposal put forward by Republican legislative leaders, according to an audio recording obtained by the Times/Herald.

“I spoke with the president today, and I told him I am working on this and we want to be helpful and he was basically, ‘I want as strong as possible, as strong as possible,’” DeSantis told supporters in the call. “Well, clearly, the governor’s proposals are much stronger than what the Legislature proposed.”

DeSantis said he also talked to Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan.

A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment Monday.

The governor’s conversations with the White House underscore the lengths to which DeSantis is going to knock down a legislative proposal that would undercut his ability to control the state’s immigration enforcement efforts.

The "renegade" Republican leaders named their proposed legislation the “Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Migration Policy (TRUMP) Act”, so I think Trump is disinclined to help DeSantis out here. He'll probably get a sick kick out of watching DeSantis twist in the wind over this confrontation between MAGAts.

Is there anything to Desantis' hinting that they want to help out the agriculture industry?

He would have power taken away and get pushed out of the spotlight

3. Florida's Republican Senate President is Ben Albritton

Florida's Republican House Speaker is Daniel Perez.

The Albritton family is a big name in the Florida citrus industry.

The Florida citrus industry is dependent on migrant labor to harvest their crops.

Seems obvious to me they're intending to protect their personal interests.

5. Ahh I see. That makes sense. Which brings me to what I've always believed about this farce

There is not going to be mass deportation.
Sure trump will make a show of rounding up some folks. Like they are doing now, with Dr.Phil in tow.
But big businesses are not on board to lose profits.
This MAGA fever dream of mass deportation will never happen. I predict that at the end of the day, the deportation numbers are not going to be much more than the Biden or Obama admin.
Immigration advocates, referred to Obama as the deporter in chief - He just did it without all this noise and fanfare.

(TPM) - "Amid the firehose of sinister Donald Trump orders and actions on the first day of Week Two, let us take a moment to revel in something less bleak: Ron DeSantis’ uninterrupted, borderline masochistic humiliation at the hands of Trump (and his friends)."
