Florida officials have given DeSantis and his allies a new way to attack women's studies

Florida Republicans may have contrived a new method of targeting lesson plans they don’t like.

Amid his obsessive war on so-called wokeness in schools (i.e., learning plans that acknowledge inequality and the humanity of racial minorities and LGBTQ people), Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has repeatedly taken potshots at students who get degrees — particularly, liberal arts degrees — in fields he has suggested are fruitless.

That was the impetus for this attempt at comedy, in which he mocked people for majoring in “zombie studies,” and this quote telling people to “go to Berkeley” if they want to study “gender ideology.”

Last week, the Florida Phoenix reported on a new pilot program approved by the state’s Board of Governors, the body that oversees Florida’s colleges and universities, to conduct an evaluation of a select group of five undergraduate programs related to the “operational costs, student outcomes, and return on investment (ROI) of each program.” According to a recent request for proposals, the board seeks a vendor to evaluate computer science, civil engineering, finance, nursing and women/gender studies programs at various Florida schools.

It was just yesterday that I was told that there is to much Florida bashing going on here and that Florida is such a lovely State to live in and it's not all about politics.

I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. Florida is a shit stain on America, we have one of the worst State Governments in the Union.

I will be relentless when it comes all the ilk of Florida. That you can take to the bank.

DeSantis wants to get rid of all these programs?

Nursing? Civil engineering? Finance?

He wants to show that women gender studies has a different outcome from other programs that are considered direct-to-career pathways.

Civil Engineering is one of those degrees that has a pretty well defined cost benefit ratio in that there are numerous jobs every year waiting specifically for that degree (I hire a number of them)

In other words, a high return on investment (ROI)

The grouping is specifically chosen to make the liberal arts choice look bad.

If your career doesn't make you rich, it is not a good career.

Thank you for explaining what DeSatan is doing.

But that is surely the goal.

At the societal level, we need a broad interest in all kinds of studies in order to keep from becoming a factory for producing mindless worker drones

However, there is some logic to it on the individual level. The young people that invest in career oriented degrees have an easier path into a career. I know a number of young people with arts degrees that are having trouble finding work related to their degrees. And when they do, it will likely be at a substantially lower wage than the technical degrees. Like it or not, this is the reality.

This is what the voters wanted, and those voters include women.

Florida is going to achieve its goal of becoming Cuba, before the revolution! Not that Cuba after the revolution was any better!

exploitation of environment, homelessness, mental health crisis,--ya know, real, hard stuff. High falutin' schoolin' is an easy target. Criticizing the abuse of power and money in FL isn't bashing, it's issuing a much needed warning to show what happens when MAGAt bought and paid for politicians are in control.
