February in Washington could be like January: Cold and snowy
We lean toward slightly below-average temperatures and slightly above-average precipitation and snowfall.
After our snowiest January in six years and our coldest in eight years, will February and the rascally groundhog offer any fast routes to spring? It doesn’t look like it. Aside from a few quick warmer intervals, it seems like cold and snowy weather is not finished with us.
We forecast that February will have near to below normal temperatures with near to above-normal precipitation, including snow.
Our average February temperature should range from 37 to 40 degrees; 40 is normal. Last February was also chilly, with an average temperature of 37.8 degrees.
Normal February precipitation is 2.62 inches (from rain and melted snow), and we would lean toward a range of 3 to 4 inches this year; last year we had 4.66 inches.
Our normal snowfall in February is 5 inches, and we project a range of 4 to 8 inches this year; last February we saw only 2.8 inches of snow, but a good deal of sleet and ice.
