Primary results will indicate how large CA LGBTQ legislative caucus may grow
The legislative bids of nonincumbent LGBTQ candidates across California will either advance or come to an end Tuesday when Golden State voters cast their ballots in the June 2 primary. They and their campaigns are mounting their last efforts to reach those still undecided among the electorate, as outside groups ramp up their spending to help their preferred candidates advance to the fall ballot.
The lone competitive legislative race in the Bay Area with out contenders is the contest for the Assembly District 12 seat straddling Marin and Sonoma counties. It is open due to Assemblymember Damon Connolly (D-San Rafael) running for a state Senate seat this year.
Among the Democratic candidates seeking to succeed him are two bisexual Democratic Marin County elected officials. Corte Madera Town Councilmember Eli Beckman and Tiburon Town Councilmember Holli P. Thier are both seeking to be sent to Sacramento as the first out legislator from a North Bay county.
Attention in the final days of the primary campaign has focused on the flood of money various special interests have spent to attack Rohnert Park City Councilmember Jackie Elward and support Marin County Supervisor Eric Lucan in the race. The tech-backed group Grow California, for instance, in recent days poured nearly $300,000 into ads on behalf of Lucan and has contributed more than $750,000 toward opposing Elward.
