SF: Lurie, transit advocates submit signatures for parcel-tax ballot measure
Days after proponents submitted signatures to qualify a regional sales-tax ballot measure to fund public transit, Mayor Daniel Lurie on Thursday joined business, labor and transit advocates to turn in signatures for a November parcel-tax measure aimed specifically at preventing cuts to the San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Agencys Muni operations.
Were going to continue to lead the nation in having a world-class transit system, Lurie told reporters before carrying a box of signed petitions into the elections department at City Hall.
The Stronger Muni for All campaign said that after Lurie kicked off signature gathering for the measure in early March, it collected 18,469 signatures far exceeding the 10,615 required to qualify the measure for the November 3 general election ballot.
Supporters say the measure would generate about $160 million annually through a tiered parcel tax on commercial and residential properties, with 95% of single-family residences paying $129 annually and large landowners and corporations paying more. Renters in rent-controlled units would pay no more than $65 per year.
