State lawmakers took the first steps Monday to trim the powers of the governor this one and all successors to enact and enforce unlimited emergency orders.
On a party-line vote, members of the Republican-Senate Government Committee approved several measures to require governors to get legislative approval once they declare an emergency. In each case, the failure of lawmakers to ratify the action within a certain number of days would end the emergency powers.
Our government isnt set up as a monarchy, complained Sen. Kelly Townsend, R-Mesa. We are not subordinate to the executive branch.
Townsend said she believes that Gov. Doug Ducey overreacted with the restrictions he put in place last year due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

(192 posts)I'm running out of words to demonstrate my disgust (and I have lots of words). This is one of several AZ Group postings this morning showing how truly rogue the AZ Re-thuglicans have become. My hubby and I live here in the state and can't keep up with their now daily assault on both the State and National Constitutions.
Appreciate all of the Arizona info today. Your style of multiple postings in a given state has helped to inform all of us over the years. That hard work is not lost on this household.
I'm adding a Sig Line I saw from DU Member "sarchasm" yesterday. Seems appropriate. What matters is the countless small deeds of unknown people, who lay the basis for the significant events that enter history. - Howard Zinn
Thank you sir!

(118,728 posts)I've made some changes to my posting patterns in the last couple of months so that I try to get in a few posts in between the more extensive coverage I provide in each state. I have to be flexible though since I'm also the tech/administrative assistant for my brother's job and then there are the times when I'm just worn out or getting a foot amputated, but I try to give my best to dig a bit deeper than the top one or two newspapers in each state. Thankfully, I've moved away from using bookmarks and I maintain a database with links to multiple sites that I can filter in numerous ways.

Being born and raised in N Texas we've both witnessed the devastating effects of long term influence from the GOP on a given population. We had hoped our move to AZ in 2014 would put us in a "slightly" better political climate. We were wrong.
