Related: About this forumThis Actress Destroyed Every Autism Clich Acting Breakdown The Back Focus
Taylor Deardens performance as Dr. Melissa King in The Pitt is one of the most thoughtful portrayals of an autistic character in recent television. In this acting breakdown, I take a deep dive into how Taylor Dearden plays Dr. King with nuance, humanity, and specificity, while avoiding many of the usual autism clichés and TV tropes that have shaped film and television for decades.
From Rain Man to The Good Doctor to The Pitt, this video explores the evolution of autism representation in film and TV and why Dr. Melissa King feels so different. Rather than treating autism like a gimmick, a superpower, or a collection of stereotypes, The Pitt gives us a character who feels like a real person: smart, awkward, capable, emotionally perceptive, overwhelmed at times, and deeply human. Thats what makes Taylor Deardens performance so compelling.

(114,168 posts)1. Bryan Cranston is so (rightfully) proud of her (his daughter). She is a favorite of mine on The Pitt
Excellent performances in a cast full of them. But, she does stand out.
Those who have not seen the Pitt- which just finished its second season, really should get a HBO-MAX subscription for a couple of weeks and watch it all. One need not be a medical professional or even an ER doc, nurse, or other to like it, though if you do have some knowledge it makes it even more enjoyable. ER was the medical show of its time given a very heightened degree of accuracy. But, the Pitt blows it out of the water.

(114,168 posts)3. I vaguely remember Airwolf--mainly because of Jan Michael Vincent (a teen heartthrob at the time)
I'd forgotten Earnest Borgnine was on it-- wow a tough old goat. Boy, the stories in that video were pretty depressing overall. I had no idea whatever happened to Vincent. Doesn't seem like his life past his early acting days was a good one.
