(78,873 posts)How the heck did you do that?
(I know nothing about photography.)
CaliforniaPeggy
(155,952 posts)Really good equipment (camera AND lens) and wanting to keep getting better at taking moon photos.
That's it in a nutshell. More details if you want them!

(78,873 posts)This is a very artistic shot, and requires a good sense of aesthetics, balance and composition.
The rough gray highly texturized moon slice pops out at you up against the solid smooth black darkness of the rest of the moon.
And then the perfect symmetry of the slices, light and dark.
But I guess I wondered about a couple of things.
Why don't more people show the rough surface of the moon in pictures of the moon?
And does it take an especially advanced camera to see the surface of the moon like that?

(1,554 posts)I'm impressed that that was just taken with a camera with no telescope involved. Very cool and a very good shot!
CaliforniaPeggy
(155,952 posts)The lens is a 100 to 400mm and there's an extra feature in the camera that's called the 2X extender. It's a sort of electronic zoom and it works wonderfully!
Thanks for your kind words!

I also want to thank you again for your photo from some time ago, that I use for my desktop photo. The black background with the crescent moon has a dramatic, classy look that I like for my computer screen.

(40,561 posts)I've never seen a U-shaped moon & had to look it up.
When the crescent Moon travels straight down toward the horizon, you will get the 'U' shaped Moon. Many describe this as when the 'horns' of the Moon point upward. This can happen once or twice a year, again depending on the latitude of your location.
