Old Hickory

I often wondered why he was called "Old Hickory," and I finally looked it up.

Andrew Jackson earned the nickname "Old Hickory" during the War of 1812 from his soldiers. While leading troops along the Natchez Trace, the War Department suddenly ordered him to disband his men without supplies or pay. Jackson refused to abandon them, financing their provisions himself and walking the grueling trail, enduring the exact same hardships. His troops compared his absolute toughness, determination, and unyielding strength to the resilient wood of the hickory tree.

My 5-year old birthday party had a drive up carousel kids could ride horses on. The “Battle of New Orleans” was the music played while kids rode the ride.

This was in a growing, 1960s suburb of New Orleans.

Little did we know we were about to be gaslit.
