Yes, a very long time. It is reassuring that some things are still somewhat consistent, like your friendly Mahalo greetings.

This has been a "consistency" in our lives. And a very positive one.

The reason I got a computer back in 2002 was to get on DU. I read about it in Nation Mag as an alternative news source, and couldn't wait to get on.

What an interesting history! I was getting desperate after the 2000 election, just trying to find any reasonable political news and opinion. Hard to believe now how little there was at the time. Apparently, a lot of liberals were quite inactive (or perhaps underground?).

After 9/11, practically everything was ultra conservative, because no one in the media wanted to be perceived as "unpatriotic". I finally found a few openminded sites online and it was Democratic Underground that stuck over the years. I was a reader/lurker for a couple years before I finally signed up. I still have quite a few friends that I met here years ago and a few who have passed away.

I have a close cyber buddy on DU who passed away unexpectedly in 2023. Her name is Me. 💔💙 She's in our Memorials. I think of her every day, along with my other loved ones.

I enjoyed reading about your history of funding DU. This is such a unique, special spot in the Universe.

Yes, DU is a special spot, especially considering how so many often impersonal social media platforms have become dominant. I am sometimes surprised that DU has endured as well as it has.

I've changed my screen name several times, once after an ill-advised, self-imposed tombstoning during the Hillary/Barack wars of '07, where I lost 35K+ posts. I had to come crawling back on my hands and knees with a check in my hand to get reinstated after that one, but I couldn't bear being without DU. I've never come near your level off proficiency, though, Cha. 😉

Full disclosere .. I left for two years in 2010 because of all the Pres Obama hate. I posted on the Obama Diaries by a woman in England who provided an excellent diary of the Administration.

She was on DU and was actually run off from all the hate on her phoos, so she started her own site.

I read on the Obama Diaries in 2012 that DU had started having Private Groups, so I came back in the fold.

And here we all are.

I started off as "DumpGump," then moved on to "ClintonTyree" after Bush was finished and we could change our screen names, then on to the present iteration of SergeStorms.
I've had quite a history here since around 2001, but there's no other place like it, and like a very intelligent and prolific writer once said, "and here we all are."
