Costco hot dog deal changes. Huge change in societal norms?

https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/costco-quietly-changes-1-50-180300115.html

Same price but water instead of soda.

I thought that fountain soda was cheaper than bottled water, considering shipping, handling, storage, and labor.
Surely, the fountain drinks will still be there.

Protests, Letters to the editor. Cries of communist, Anti-Christ, and heathens. Pitchforks and torches.

Have I over-judged today's culture?
Or just getting used to it?

(OK. A wee bit of satire/sarcasm)

(i.e., Diet Soda)s and no other soda since college/grad school. So, the water works for me. But, honestly? I do frequent Costco sometimes, but I have never had a hot dog there! 'Guess I may sometime soon.

Soda or bottled water that is not environmentally friendly?

You get to pick water or soda with your hotdog.

“ Costco has added the option of substituting a bottle of water for soda as part of the $1.50 meal deal. That should appeal to members who want to skip the soda, but still get the combo price, although the chain should expect some blowback over its use of plastic bottles.”

…the area where tires are sold, and the unpleasant smell of the rubber is overpowering and a real turn off. I would not want to sit there and eat, no matter how inexpensive or good the food might be.
