(26,960 posts)Being half Greek American we'd have it here and there at some point.
One day out of several visits to our
NYC '64/'65 World's Fair we ate at the Indian Pavillion. Mild chicken curry, and nan bread.
I'm one of those Italian bread, and all kinds of (but esp crusty) roll lover from a young age. So how does this tie in, you may wonder?
Well, the nan bread was a revelation! 🥰 😄
My dad especially when younger; was a sweet, caring, fun-loving person; saw how much I loved that nan bread. Well, by golly, he was going to find some for me!
Only.....
all he kept doing was bringing home various (slightly difderent) pita breads!
"Daddd..." (for the Xth time) "this is pita bread, not nan bread!". 😑
I couldn't (having had it once) quite explain; but holding a vaugish memory as to why it didn't look like, nor taste like nan bread back then. For those who've never had it; kind of light beige, thick (like a pancake), irregular sort of egg shaped 8-ish inch bread, with light brown, to occasional black charred spots.
He finally gave up.
I still ate pita bread, just not under "false prenteses"! 😄
As for me - about 12ish years later a friend, of a newish friend to me introduced her, and then she to me to an Indian restaurant in NYC. From then on I had nan bread, and so much more in many restaurants!
