(13,090 posts)Opera cake is a classic, elaborate French dessert featuring layers of coffee-soaked almond sponge cake (joconde), coffee buttercream, and chocolate ganache, topped with a chocolate glaze, often with the word "Opéra" written on top. It's known for its rich coffee and chocolate flavor, and while time-consuming, it's considered an impressive and decadent treat for special occasions.

(11,436 posts)For those who haven't heard of it, it's a cake made from lots of thin layers of yellow cake separated by chocolate frosting (and frosted all over with chocolate frosting). I'm of the "cake is only there to support the frosting" school, lol.
Raspberry torte sounds yummy too!

(26,318 posts)But my favorite bday cake was not a bday cake, it was pumpkin pie!! Mom would fix this vs. a cake. Ah, the memories!

(2,892 posts)I was in the kitchen, lighting the "eight" and "three" numbered candles and, in my peripheral vision, I could see her come to the kitchen and then turn back to go to the livingroom. When I brought the pie out with the lit candles, she acted so surprised.
I thought that was so sweet of her. ❤️

(26,318 posts)my Mom making a pumpkin pie too, stead of a birthday cake for my birthday. Days in which I remember w/ fondness.
Take care and go forth w/ joy!

(2,892 posts)It was my fault for not being clear. I can see how "her last birthday" wouldn't necessarily mean her last birthday ever.
You take care and go forth with joy as well!

(2,892 posts)When I was a kid, I absolutely loved having a slice of fresh chocolate cake with a cold glass of milk. It was such a perfect combination to me.
3catwoman3
(29,591 posts)I put a mug of milk in the freezer long enough for it to get a crust of ice on the surface of the milk, so it is really, really cold.

(29,591 posts)...and am very fond of their chocolate/chocolate chip and red velvet flavors, both of which are frosted with generous amounts of vanilla cream cheese frosting.
In nice weather, I can walk there, and have done so on a few occasions, figuring I might burn off about 2 bites worth of calories -

(23,726 posts)WHen I bake a coconut cake I fill between the layers with some of the frosting, some drained crushed pineapplel and some coconut. Then frost the whole thing with the white frosting and lots of coconut on the outside.
Oh yes and I make Ermine frosting for this cake, not buttercream or cream cheese. It is a light and delicate frosting that only uses 1 cup of regular granulated sugar so it isn't too sweet.
I always wanted German Chocolate for my birthday cake.

(372 posts)With butter cream frosting. My grandfather used to make it and I loved it. Now my daughter makes the same recipe (from scratch as he did) for me. I'm spoiled

(35 posts)However, the best cake Ive ever had in my life is Paul Prudhommes spiced pecan cake. Ive made it once for a couples gourmet group that my ex and I belonged to. It literally takes all day to make this cake if you follow the original recipe, but its divine! I always thought Id make it again some day when Im snowed in with nothing much else to do - but that hasnt happened ~ YET.

But, I have yet to meet a cake that I did not like!

(60,317 posts)My grandmother used to make it, and passed it on to my mom, but we cant find it.
It is/was a dark chocolate layer cake with a moist icing of dark chocolate mixed with just the right amount of coffee.
If it could meet the daily nutritional needs, I could have subsisted on that alone for decades!
