EDITED TO UPDATE: Thanks to all of the good vibes from DU, I did survive unscathed. I was (of course!!!) picked, but it was a pretty quick proceeding. The case had to do with a grazing lease/cattle issue. It was a small jury - only six of us and ALL WOMEN!!!!! LOL
I didn't run into any obvious MAGA's, but in typical small-town-Texas-style, you sure could (in my opinion) tell that the judge favored the Plaintiff (who is a local). The Defendant was from "other parts" and didn't get the same (wink! wink!!) treatment in my thinking.
Unfortunately for the Plaintiff, the rest of us were not as impressed with his side of the case as the judge seemed to be. The unanimous verdict went for the Defendant.
Thanks again for all of the support and kind words! I'm glad to finally be home and done!

I have jury duty this afternoon in a very red, rural Texas county. I am going to stand out like a sore thumb.
All good vibes appreciated. I could probably have gotten out of it but I do believe in the system. Still dont want to go. But I will.
Ill be fine, right?

(6 posts)When my husband and I were faced with a difficult situation in having to attend a neighborhood Christmas party attended by MAGAS, I went into my anthropologist mode, observing them as though they were exotic tribal members.
We also got some wonderful stories. So do it for the stories! Also stay safe. Please tell us how it went, it could be funny or even satisfying 😆.

(934 posts)It takes a lot out of you. I made a hung jury twice. The other jurist knew he was innocent but just wanted to go home on Friday. He had very bad legal rep there whole defense was he doesn,t have to prove his innocence The other side has to prove his guilt. So they had no evidence at all the police were caught lying and one refused to even show up.

(2,677 posts)It is in almost all cases a sure way to get selected out of the jury. There are a few rare cases where they will like you, but those will be the interesting court cases.

(37,296 posts)Therein she learned that the purpose of Grand Juries is something of an anachronism.
I wished it had been me instead of her, since I know a bit more about Constitutional Law and would have enjoyed sparring with the prosecutor. (My wife felt intimidated. )
A criminal jury is a different matter. I have been called and sat in the jury room with a cop who was also called. Neither of us were selected for the jury, which was good thing, since just sitting there, I'd already decided that the smirking defendant- charged with making rascist terroristic threats - was guilty. It wouldn't have been a fair trial were I on the jury.
You may be called for a trivial case, but on a serious case you have the opportunity to show decency where it otherwise would not exist.
Doing good in an indecent world often takes courage.
That is what I wish for you, courage.
Be safe and well.

(2,182 posts)I was on a jury where the foreman was a complete moron and misogynist. The issue was a date-rape assault. The foreman said he knew the guys Dad who was a great guy, so the girl had to be lying. He almost got everybody besides me to vote guilty in the first ten minutes based just on that. I had to make sure we talked about the actual evidence. In the end, we voted guilty. It would have been a lot easier to get the actual issues addressed had I been the foreman. Lesson learned.
Two years later I was in a restaurant and was confronted by the defendant, now out after doing two years in jail. I told him he might have gotten off if hed just taken the stand and that he should blame his lawyer, not me. It worked!

(24,738 posts)Jury duty is a fundamental element of our judicial system. Juries represent the morals of the community.
Ive served on four juries, 3 criminal and one civil. Ill serve again if called. Like voting, jury duty is a privilege of living in a democracy.
God luck and good wishes. I hope politics will stop at the courthouse steps.

Let us know (if you can) how things go....
