(55,931 posts)My family has always put an angel on the top of the tree. Mrs. Aristus' family always put a star. I'm the one who puts up the tree and all of the decorations every year, so we have an angel. Interesting for me and Mrs. Aristus; an angel, a tree, and even a Christmas celebration: we're both atheists. We both came from strong Christian backgrounds. Mine, liberal; hers conservative. But we're done with all that now. We can celebrate the birth of a devoted teacher of peace, forgiveness, and grace. But we don't make a divine deal out of it.

(25,903 posts)We moved to a street where more people decorate for the seasons so now hubs' very interested in our house adding to the festivities. He's putting up a lot more lights and ornaments outside since we moved. I've always done the house and treee decorations but am still adjusting to a 1900 sq ft house from a 2500 sq ft house, so still experimenting with the placemment of my red Santa collection and my Santa Village. A new challenge!

(3,150 posts)It's a rental house so I'm not into putting too much effort into anything house related. They do light up our dark street quite nicely though.

that reads IMPEACH, except for the four years of Biden when an angel that used to be on my parents tree took over again.

(28,615 posts)Instead, we use a handmade topper that our younger son made in either kindergarten or first grade. Very simple - a TP tube wrapped in foil, and a paper star sprinkled with gold glitter. It's a little beat up as our younger son is now 33, so the ornament is at least 25 years old, but that's OK - it's a sentimental favorite because of who made it.

(38,668 posts)It's adorned the top of my trees until this year when I moved and downsized my stuff, so I have a very small tree this year. I passed the Santa along to my goddaughter because I don't have kids and now Santa is topping her tree,

(11,862 posts)I have a fake 6 foot tree that has pinecones and berries. Over the last few years I've really liked just having soft white lights on it and the starfish shell at the top. I put a light in the shell which makes it glow.

(8,734 posts)The one we've had for the last 3 years is a beautiful white star...more like the traditional star over Bethlehem.
I expect it will out last us.
We also have a 19 piece ceramic nativity set that my wife made in 1971. She hand painted each of the pieces. It also will outlast us.

it gets sparsely decorated at yuletime. And occasionally plucked for flavoring our soups!
