My family has always put an angel on the top of the tree. Mrs. Aristus' family always put a star. I'm the one who puts up the tree and all of the decorations every year, so we have an angel. Interesting for me and Mrs. Aristus; an angel, a tree, and even a Christmas celebration: we're both atheists. We both came from strong Christian backgrounds. Mine, liberal; hers conservative. But we're done with all that now. We can celebrate the birth of a devoted teacher of peace, forgiveness, and grace. But we don't make a divine deal out of it.

We moved to a street where more people decorate for the seasons so now hubs' very interested in our house adding to the festivities. He's putting up a lot more lights and ornaments outside since we moved. I've always done the house and treee decorations but am still adjusting to a 1900 sq ft house from a 2500 sq ft house, so still experimenting with the placemment of my red Santa collection and my Santa Village. A new challenge!

Instead, we use a handmade topper that our younger son made in either kindergarten or first grade. Very simple - a TP tube wrapped in foil, and a paper star sprinkled with gold glitter. It's a little beat up as our younger son is now 33, so the ornament is at least 25 years old, but that's OK - it's a sentimental favorite because of who made it.
