(75,838 posts)There was a wealthy family that lived in a huge house (their yard was the whole city block).
It was about 3 blocks from my best friend's house.
We ha Halloween 2 days then, so I'd go to his house one day, and he'd come to mine the next day.
Among their businesses was a 7Up bottling plant.
So, they'd give 2 full size candy bars, a bottle of 7Up, and a roll of pennies (50 cents) to every kid. Had to cost them hundreds of dollars each year.
The year of my Mr. Peanut costume, the lady manning the door liked it so much she tossed another roll of pennies in my sack!

(13,767 posts)I was not very impressed! As a grownup now, though--pretty sweet treat!

(55,602 posts)We put them aside when we got home. Then we would marvel at all our candy!

My kids used to get little spider-shaped rings.

Nobody ever gave me a cup of coffee though.

(71,633 posts)Crazed Bible-thumpers who hate and fear Halloween as "Satanic" (apparently blissfully unaware that Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, is a Christian holiday), put them into our candy bags when all we want is some October fun. Not a histrionic lecture on salvation.

(5,412 posts)Then there were the candy apples and caramel apples. And none of them ever had razor blades or needles in them. If people did not want to be bothered, they would not turn their porch light on.

(16,861 posts)I would wash the coins put them in little bundles of sheer black mesh tied with satin orange ribbons. I don't do that anymore because it's too much work. The last few Halloweens, I've included toy disassembled gliders with the candy. Everyone LOVES those and they seem to be more popular than the candy. Unfortunately, this year I'll be working, so I won't do anything, which makes me sad.

(16,462 posts)snow on the ground and all, one lady gave each of us a cookie and a cup of hot cocoa. Made it worth the struggle to get our costumes on over our snow suits!
