(6,417 posts)I don't think of it as a romantic movie specifically. I tend to forget that it is that, though: a brilliant romantic movie wrapped up in a sweeping historical epic. What a movie.

(226 posts)In You've Got Mail, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's chemistry is great. Hanks' character is affable which makes him hard to dislike and Ryan's character is a warm, adorable woman who tries not to like Hank's character.
While You Were Sleeping, this is one of my favorite Sandra Bullock movies. Sandra Bullock's character (Lucy) is secretly in love with a man (Peter) who really doesn't know she exists. When she saves his life, everyone but his brother (Jack) thinks she is his fiancee. As Jack tests her with questions about Peter's life, Lucy figures out she's in love with Jack and Jack figures out he's in love with Lucy.

(2,356 posts)Described as the most beautiful movie ever made. It's Swedish, based on a true story.
A gazillion commercials have copied scenes from it.

(17,653 posts)Not a fan of this genre, but that one affected me greatly.
If one views Reds as a romantic film, I would say that is on my list of top films too. I guess I always thought of it as a kind of historical epic.
debm55
(39,985 posts)makes for a great movie. I have never seen Reds so I can not comment on it. The English Patient did the same.

(29,895 posts)Another that I watch whenever its on. Christmas mostly.
I have always been fascinated by it. It is a sentimental plot but it is so well crafted; the sets, the photography, the acting and directing, the music. I love that all of the signs are in Hungarian while the dialogue is entirely in English. Even the prices and the cash register show Hungarian currency. why? Because it was filmed in Budapest. The play the movie is based on is from a Hungarian author Parfumerie by Miklòs Laszlò, and the setting reminded director Ernst Lubitsch of his childhood and his father's store in Berlin.

Same with TV series like Up the Down Staircase or Downton.

Perhaps I had a wicked childhood,
Perhaps I had a miserable youth,
But somewhere in my wicked, miserable past,
There must have been a moment of truth.
For here you are standing there loving me
Whether or not you should.
So, somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good.

(34 posts)Dr. Zhivago was like a life altering movie for me. I will cry for days after watching it!
Let me get back to you if I think of any not mentioned. I'm a sucker for a well written/ performed romance. ❤️
I think the last movie I dusted off to watch was a restored copy of Jean Renoir's 1939 classic "La règle du jeu". I guess that counts.
I post the wiki reference, because like Zhivago, it's more meaningful I think in its historical context.
