I am back for now and still missing my beloved big kitty that died in his sleep on Jan. 2, 2025. Great New Year 2025 so far not!
Did I want a LNG or a Frigidaire? I went with the Frigidaire as I'd read that LNG was not a good brand to have (?).
It is plastic, plastic and no ice trays came with it.
It is the same size as the one they hauled away, a 26 year old Hotpoint that was older than the delivery man!
The seals around the doors were shot.
I paid $350.00 for it in 2001 when I bought it.
Same size, 18.3 cu.
I hope I don't regret taking it.
Any input at all on a Frigidaire refrigerator (no ice maker)?
Thanks.

(229 posts)needed to purchase a refrigerator with an ice maker otherwise it's ice cube trays. It probably would have cost a bit more.

(21,154 posts)It did not have an ice maker either.
Oh well ...
I got this from PG&E's energy program.
I had to wait until it was 20 years old+ to have it replaced and this is what I now have.
It is a lot quieter, I'll give it that much.

(71,052 posts)If it's an act of congress to get water tubing to the fridge, it could be a lot more money, given installation.
Our main fridge has an ice maker, but getting water to the fridge was really simple in our house.

(71,052 posts)It's the fridge in the basement. No frills, no icemaker.
We use it for drinks, and small frozen stuff (ice cream shrimp...), leftovers, and condiments I don't use all the time.
I'm guess it's around 12 years old.
No issues at all.
It replaced a Kenmore that we bought in the mid 80s.
Not that we expect to need another fridge, but we'd buy that brand again.

(71,052 posts)Our bigger fridge in the kitchen is about 7 years old. Don't see needing new unless this one lasts an unexpectedly short amount of time.

(23,816 posts)The refrigerator was in her house when she moved in 30 years ago ! And it still works fine. No ice maker thigh. And the newer one she brought a GE the ice maker no longer works and she uses plastic trays to make ice!
I just brought a new LG after dealing with an awful Samsung that I had for 6 years, ice maker stopped working and the engine got frozen all the time and it was noisy. I had to unplug it for 3-5 hours to stop the noise. My husband used a streamer to melt the frozen engine. Its nice having an ice maker and a quiet refrigerator again.

Sorry you have a nightmare on your hands w/it!

(71,052 posts)...a refrigerator problem or failure.
Our replacements were either a size upgrade or just a desire to replace a long-in-the-tooth fridge with a more efficient one.
We had one with the water dispenser but had issues with the valve leaking through so I just shut the internal valve.
That was a big side by side, but my wife prefers the freezer above. So, rather than get that valve replaced, we got new.
One of the delivery guys offered us $75 for the old one, so he got it.

(47,958 posts)that Frigidaire is the best brand. Of course it was by an independent appliance retailer. I have a Gibson, 28 years, that was made by Frigidaire. I plan to replace it very soon with a ............. Frigidaire!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frigidaire
Frigidaire was the original fridge in 1916. "From 1919 to 1979, the company was owned by General Motors. During that period, it was first a subsidiary of Delco-Light[10] and was later an independent division based in Dayton, Ohio. The division also manufactured air conditioning compressors for GM cars. While the company was owned by General Motors, its logo featured the phrase "Product of General Motors", and later renamed to "Home Environment Division of General Motors".
Frigidaire was sold to the White Consolidated Industries in 1979, which in 1986 was purchased by Electrolux, its current parent. "
Anything made by Electrolux in my experience is top-notch. Like every other industry, history is a series of conglomerations and takeovers. They bought White Consolidated, which had various brand names. For awhile they owned Husqvarna, another top shelf brand. A corporation that is buying and selling divisions, fixing systems, tech, distribution, is a vibrant enterprise.

(8,385 posts)We have a 12-year-old Whirlpool. The icemaker fails every year or so. We're currently making ice in trays and I'm fine with that. No other problems with the frig- knock on wood.

(21,154 posts)I can make my own ice if I need it.
A set of plastic trays is ~$10.00 or so.

(40,010 posts)the goods fall out. Not overstocked---just that are plastic and don't hold on well. Top shelf is not sturdy enough to hold goods. It is again plastic. Heavy goods on that shelf must be kept to the sides not the middle.

Life as a widow.
When my husband was alive it was always packed full of food.
Now just me = frozen dinners.
I don't cook much any more as I can't think of a reason to do so.

(21,154 posts)However, the bottom shelf on the side door is plastic and plain useless.
I can see that already. *sigh*

(4,148 posts)Hurricane Harvey. After power was restored, our 30 -year-old Kenmore wouldn't start up. Bought a new one with a 5 year warranty. After 5 years and 2 months, it died. The local repairman, a former high school student of my wife's, tried everything, but it could not be revived. It turns out that Kenmore has a new refrigerator manufacturer and they are not as good as the old days.
I asked him which brand he would buy and he hesitated as, he says, none of them are made that good anymore. His advice was don't buy one with a lot of bells and whistles. We went shopping and found a Frigidaire. I called my repairman and he said ok.
So far so good, however, Frigidaire wants you to buy new water filers and air filters from them, so the warning lights come on reminding you to do so. We ignore them and turn them off.
Even though it came with an ice maker, we did not hook it up. Our water is not the best, having a lot of suspended solids, and those plastic hoses that come with it have a habit of breaking and then the water leaks. We're old school now with ice trays.
Hope this helps

(3 posts)We have one, the good white, basic Frigidaire no ice maker, purchased in fall of 2019, has been through 5 moves, in and out of storage, moving van twice, still working like new. Good luck with yours, new appliances now are a bit of a toss up, especially new stoves, at least that has been our experience. Oh, and dont get me started about washing machines now. O.M.G.

(684 posts)A month ago I replaced my top-of-the-line (expensive) fridge with a Frigidaire similar to yours and I love it!!
Historically, over many decades, the two times Ive ever bought a Frigidaire, they outlasted any other brand. Real workhorse. No extra bells and whistles to break down. Easy to clean and maintain.
I hope you enjoy your new fridge for many years to come!
I am so sorry you lost your precious kitty just after the New Year started. There are no words to express the deep pain of losing a pet. And their memory stays in our hearts forever.
Ironically, Im looking for loving homes for a 6-month-old gorgeous tortoise-shell stray mama kitten who gave birth to five adorable kittens in one of my sheds (thankfully, very clean and safe environment). Now at 9 weeks, with constant care and love, the babies are all super healthy and lively. Three already adopted to good homes, and three Im still looking for homes. Im in SW Florida, and after calling nearby rescues and animal shelters in two counties, I wasnt impressed (read: dont trust) that the furbabies wouldve had a safe and loving future (no matter what their AI website says). Hopefully, I can find loving homes for the remaining three kittens.
Again, best wishes with your new Frigidaire; and please take care of yourself during this sad time of grieving your precious kitty. Do you have other pets to help comfort you?

(21,154 posts)Yes, this is a very basic refrigerator. No bells and whistles, that's for sure.
As for my belated kitty, I came home and he was laying in the hallway next to the furnace and dead.
Silver was 11 years old and I had no idea he was sick.
He was scared to death of fireworks. They were letting some off around here. I wonder if he had a heart attack and died?
My other remaining cat still goes to where I found him and is sniffing the area where he was at when I found him. It is devastating no doubt!
Best of luck placing your kittens. They sound beautiful!

(684 posts)I hear you about your other kitty. Pets can be more devastated than we are when they lose a sibling they loved. Thats when we need to comfort them as they grieve. Which also comforts us.
Sending good vibes to you and your kitty.

(105 posts)It was the cheapest little tv I could find, kind of crappy. I was surprised when I found out they are now called LG. They sure aren't cheap any more.

(21,154 posts)PG&E decided the old Hotpoint was a goner.
Seals gone pretty much, making a lot of noise and was leaking at times.
They offered me a new one so I took it.
They hauled the old Hotpoint away. It was made in the year 2000.
It worked pretty good for a long time.
I guess this new one will me more energy efficient is the idea.

(105 posts)It's about 20 years old, never had any trouble with it. Got a new Samsung fridge about 5 years ago, never had any trouble with it, either. That's when the Frigidaire moved to the garage. The Samsung has many more frills, like an icemaker, cold water dispenser, LED lights, glass shelves instead of wire. Both fridges keep my food cold, that's the main thing.
