Penny is 15 years, six months and two days old. Born the 4th of July. She is half Cavalier King Charles spaniel and half American Eskimo. She has the sweetest, gentlest disposition, although with a fun-loving, independent spirit. My heart is breaking for her.
It looks like she will be crossing the rainbow bridge today if the vet can get here through the snow.
She's been fading the past few months. Lost the ability to walk or stand - probably some neurological issue according to the vet. i've been changing her diapers and towels about 10 times a day, but she didn't seem to be suffering until last night, She refused food yesterday, and later, water. I've been giving her 0.5 cc of water with a syringe every hour or so.
Overnight she began panting heavily and having muscle convulsions and barking in pain. The three of us were up with her most of the night trying to calm and reassure her. Gave her her dose of gabapentin this morning.
I've been playing the amazingly calming "Song for Daisy" by Gnash on loop, it is almost magical instrumental music for dogs.
Please send her vibes to pass gently and without pain. Thank you.
My husband, daughter and I are absolute wrecks. And I'm so worried that the vet from Lap of Love might not get here. I don't want my sweet baby girl to suffer any longer.
I called a home euthanasia service, but the vet can't get here until noon or later, and the snow has been falling more heavily than we expected.

(2,673 posts)He's been in a lively "second puppyhood" for the past six or more months, and this weekend he began to go downhill. I would prefer to have a vet come to the house and there is one who provides this service in-home, but hubs seems reluctant to commit to this right now even though he knows it's the kind and right thing to do. Again, my heartfelt condolences to you.

(6,879 posts)We think the snow might have been for her - she adored it. Used to run around with her mouth open scooping it up lie a little snow plow.
We gave her a small bowl of snow this morning and she licked up every bit. Did the same with the second bowl too. Thank heaven we were able to give her something enjoyable.
Think. Again.

The path out of which is the rainbow,

The rainbow rose up with me.

(11,828 posts)I'm so sorry that you and your family are facing this ordeal. My wife and I went through it last May, when we had to end the suffering of our 16-year old Cairn, Ozzie.
D and I send our deepest hopes and wishes for an easy passing. She said that the burden got a little less when we received his ashes from the vet, to whom we paid extra to have the ashes kept from a single-dog cremation.
Some joy for the years you had with her and ease from the suffering of all four of you.

(4,644 posts)and so sorry for the heartbreak you and your family feels. I understand about the snow... my Mom died on Friday, just before the largest snowstorm in decades hit us. I even had to delay the meeting at the funeral home today because of the roads. I do hope your vet can get there safely. Our fur babies leave huge imprints on our hearts... losing as many of my elder cats as I did last year, I had to get myself to where I acknowledged the loss, the grief, and the pain... and then throw myself into something else like cleaning house. Otherwise, I'd have just been a bundle of tears all the time. Peace to you and yours... and a "good and faithful dog" pat for Penny.

(3,094 posts)I am experiencing the same thing with my 14-year old cavalier, Georgia. Tuesday morning she was unable to walk, as though her entire backside is paralyzed. We've been using a sling to toilet her and using diapers which don't help much. It is such a stinking mess, but so far she has not demonstrated pain. I've been having trouble getting her to drink water so I've been mixing it with wet food which she gobbles up. The vet said the anti-inflammatory she's taking can cause kidney issues so I know drinking is important. I worry that she will suddenly decline like your baby if I can't get her to drink water more than she now is. I don't know what to do. Maybe I should just put her down, but cognitively she is so sharp, it just doesn't seem right. Based on what I've seen, her mobility is not going to get better. I don't know what the most humane course would be here. She is also a sweet, gentle baby who looks at me with such trust in her eyes. I want to do what is best for her. I guess I'll just take it one day at a time and hope she passes quietly in her sleep.
Peace and healing to you, dear. I know your heartbreak. I have no problem admitting that it is every bit as painful to lose a beloved pet as a family member. They ARE family members. Take care.

She is getting spoiled rotten, and her last days will be w/ whatever she wants.
