(39,367 posts)I'd never seen them on a stalk until a few years back when the Farmer's Market had them.
I had a cat who liked Brussels sprouts.

(39,367 posts)Farming equipment has gotten BIG! I grew up on a farm that grew corn, beans, & sugar beets. Everything was a lot smaller.

(189,677 posts)I had no idea THAT many carrots were needed for anything. Not that many - extrapolated out to the many carrot farms like this 😳

(39,367 posts)When I was a kid, the sugar company paid farmers by the pound of beets they produced. Farmers would drive trucks of beets to the depository, weigh the truck with the beets, dump the beets into a bin that shook the dirt off, redeposited the dirt back into the truck, & then weighed the truck again. The whole process took less than five minutes. Waiting in line took longer. The company also did sugar tests on the beets & knew which farmers produced beets with higher sugar content & had awards for tonnage & sugar content.
So when I said above how much bigger the operation is now, the trucks we used might have held half of one of those blue carrot bins. Maybe half. Maybe more like a third. That's how big this equipment is compared to the 60s.

(27,984 posts)Must’ve been around 8 years old. My first thought: like cabbage, with a hint of danger. Turned out dangerous for various & sundry passersby. I still love them, despite the sulfuric effluvium.

(189,677 posts)I have a hate of brussel sprouts with the fire of 1,000 suns.
Unfortunately every foodie restaurant around here has them and my daughter likes them. I have failed as a parent.
