Given name is William; didn't like to be called Billy because it sounded diminutive. I've been okay with it for the last 70 years though.

By the way, your nickname fits you; you bring sunshine here every day.

But, only my family called me that. What's ironic is I married a guy with the last name Bell. I was torn about changing my last name because I've been a feminist since birth.

I grew up in France then moved to the US where I have been since. One big difference was that its really uncommon in France to have nicknames for people, you use their first name if you know them, not some nickname.

Apparently, I knocked a lot of things to the floor as a kid. "Boom" was the nickname that stuck from the resulting sound.

When someone I know uses my real name it seems odd.

My name is Robert, which a guy turned into Sibbity-Sobbity-Bibbity-Bobbity. That got shortened to Sibby, and then to Sib.

In college, it was Boo-Boo. One night I got a little toasted and said, “Hey, Boo-Boo Bear, let’s steal us some pic-a-nic baskets!”. It stuck.

Later, I had a program director who called me The Round Mound of Sound.

reason was that it included a word that would get me kicked out of here. Brother called me this nickname as vulgar as it was in the presence of my Parents who did or said nothing. Only my friends saw me as the sunshine.

I shared many personality traits with that bird. I was under sized compared to my peers.
I was more aggressive and combative then they were. And my "comb" was wildly large, and unkempt (read long, meaning my hair).

While I am no longer under sized. I am still aggressive and combative. And my hair is still long and unkempt.

The individual who labeled me with that name, thought it as an insult (he believed I had nefarious intentions with his sister).

does not lend itself to any known nicknames, although one of my brothers used to shorten it from two syllables to one. But he was the only one who did.

As an adult I had a nickname at one job, given to me by a supervisor. It sounded like an insult, but was actually a compliment because of why he used it. He called me Bozo, after the children's weighted punching bag clown toy because he said that, like the toy, no matter how hard I got hit by problems, I always bounced back upright.

He's the only person who called me that and the name did not last beyond that job.

My immediate supervisor was the assistant sales manager. When the assistant manager's job was eliminated to cut costs, a huge part of his responsibilities were dumped on me, in addition to my regular responsibilities, with no pay increase. I guess the manager thought that his "Bozo" would just accept that and bounce back up.

Instead, I gave my notice. The manager of another division in the company, whose division worked closely with the one I resigned from, heard that I was leaving. He offered me a position in his division with a substantial pay increase. So I took it and transferred.

The replacement on my previous job did not work out and left. Less than a year later, the manager who had nicknamed me Bozo was demoted and transferred.

Her friends always called her "Phoebe the Furby Fan" - she wasn't even into Furbys. I think they liked the way the words sounded.

... in ROTC I picked up the nickname "Zero," (based on the Beetle Bailey character). You may conclude from that that I did not overwhelm my peers with my leadership ability.

Wasn't really a kid.
But, in late college and a few years after I played in pickup games at a couple local playgrounds.
My one clear strength in basketball was my explosiveness. I was cat quick and could jump over a bus.
I was playing tennis with a girl/friend (not romantic at all). She was a serious tennis player & wanted to play against guys *me, her brother, her cousin) because we hit it a bit harder than most of competitors at that level. (Local tournaments.)
We're waiting for our turn at a court & a loose ball comes right to us. I pick it up and Saud "Warch thus. Let's see how they react." And, I went to the open hoop and dunked it with my back turned to the basket. I then passed the ball back & the guys playing were dead silent!
Later, a couple came over to say I should show up & this other playground on Tuesdays & Wednesdays.
The first couple times I got a couple alkey-oops.
Finally, one of the black guys said "Well, he ain't a brother. He must be part kangaroo."
After a while, whether I dunked or just a hanging move, someone would yell "Kanga-ROO!"
It got shortened to "Roo". After a couple of summers I was convinced that about half the guys didn't know my actual name. They just knew me as "Roo".

My father and I have the same name. So he was Big Bob, and I was Little Bob.

I didn't like that nickname too much, but it stuck for a few decades.

Because I was told I looked like a young version of Alan Hale. I also loved to wear Greek fisherman's hats! (I have one to this day in fact.)

I hated it. It was derived from my last name.

Then one year at the Russian River, I was playing on a sandy beach with a bucket, and I put it on my head. The creatures (my babysitters children) saw me and NEVER let it go.

I truly hated it. It was mean. I think I was around 7 years.

It is a familial nickname. All my siblings had it.

The “a” in my screen name was a typo 20 years ago. I never corrected it. I don’t even know how.
