Cats have this - um - power (?) over people. My dad was adamant about NOT having a cat. But I wanted one, and got one for Christmas. Before long, I noticed that Dad was carrying the cat around, petting him, and enjoying him - I n a daily basis.

Cat magic, or some such thing.
