Supreme Court ruling will reshape American politics. The only question is when
(AP) The U.S. Supreme Courts conservative majority on Wednesday handed Republicans their biggest victory yet in the perpetual battle to control the House of Representatives and statehouses across the country but it may have come too late to have much of an effect on this years midterm elections.
The 6-3 ruling effectively gutted the Voting Rights Acts requirement that districts be drawn to give minority voters a chance to elect representatives of their choosing. One practical effect of that requirement was the protection of reliably Democratic-voting majority-minority districts, even in solidly red states where lawmakers could otherwise favor the GOP.
With that mandate now largely gone, Republican lawmakers across the country and especially in the South have a freer hand to eliminate Democratic-leaning districts and pad the total number of seats they can win to hold the U.S. House. There are more than a dozen such seats in Republican-controlled states.

(7,141 posts)If we can keep a Congressional majority in place, and actually win the White House in 2028, the Democrats better not slow walk the reforms necessary to take back this country from the Fascists. We did it in 2021=23, too timid to take the risks necessary to keep Trump out of the White House and get him tried and convicted for January 6th and we cannot afford to be distracted again.
The first thing a Democratic controlled congress with a Democrat in the White House needs to do is pack the Supreme Court. No messing around this time, no dilly-dallying, foot dragging or moaning about senate traditions. Break the filibuster and pack the court with the most progressive, liberal justices in the country, to undo all of the crap this court has done. The goal should be to ram through everything that has been lost, including Roe, Citizens United, rolling back presidential immunity and strengthening voting rights. Then turn inward and censure Thomas, Alito, Cavanaugh, Gorsuch, Coney-Barrett and Roberts. Maybe they'll retire then and the Democratic President can find more progressive liberals to put on the court.
