Democrats Better Bring a Gun to the Jimmy Kimmel Knife Fight

If Donald Trump is going to use the presidency to pressure Disney and ABC to fire Jimmy Kimmel over a joke about his wife, Democrats need to stop pretending this is a debate about “civility.” It is not. It is a power play and Democrats better damn well be prepared to play it when they are back in power.

Both Donald and Melania Trump publicly demanded yesterday that ABC and Disney fire Kimmel after Kimmel joked that Melania had “a glow like an expectant widow.” Trump framed the joke as dangerous rhetoric after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner security incident.

Let’s be clear about the standard Republicans are trying to create: liberal comedians can be threatened by the president, pressured through their corporate bosses, and accused of inciting violence for making an ugly joke. Meanwhile, Fox News’ resident clown Greg Gutfeld gets to run a nightly sewer system of bigotry, historical distortion, and authoritarian propaganda, then hide behind “comedy” whenever anyone objects.

Nope. Not anymore.
