(The Conversation) President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Dec. 11, 2025, that aims to supersede state-level artificial intelligence laws that the administration views as a hindrance to innovation in AI.
State laws regulating AI are increasing in number, particularly in response to the rise of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT that produce text and images. Thirty-eight states enacted laws in 2025 regulating AI in one way or another. They range from prohibiting stalking via AI-powered robots to barring AI systems that can manipulate peoples behavior.

EOs are only instructions to executive branch EMPLOYEES, An EO cannot order a state to do anything.

(3,600 posts)3. AI needs guardrails. Unbridled experimentation for
economic purposes undermines us all. The states can implement restrictions and guidance that can possibly become nationalized. Trump is listening to the billionaires looking to force AI on all of us to pay their circular loan agreements.
AI has its place and already its analytical tools has proven beneficial. But social mores have their place as well.
We let the dot.com explosion run amok and now we pay a price for the dominion of a few powerful companies.
AI needs a period of reflection and introspection not in its genetic heritage. Woe is us if the government is run by the AI leadership.
