Are you a one-per-center? It depends on where you live
Source: https://www.visualcapitalist.com/mapped-the-income-needed-to-join-the-top-1-in-every-u-s-state/
If you make a half-million per year, you're a one-per-center if you live in West Virginia, Mississippi, or New Mexico. If you live anywhere else in the US, your income just doesn't cut it.
Mapped: The Income Needed to Join the Top 1% in Every U.S. State
What does it take to join the top 1% of income earners in America?
Well, it depends on where you live. In some states, your annual income needs to crack $1 million to be among the states income elitein others, it takes less than half of that to make the cut.
This graphic illustrates the income needed to be in the top 1% of earners in each state. The data was compiled by SmartAsset as of June 2024.

This newsletter item is actually an enticement to get Visual Capitalist readers to download their free app called Voronoi. I always skip the free apps, but some of their graphics are interesting and thought-provoking. (Sometimes nausea-inducing.)

(36,606 posts)1. This may be misleading. I believe the numbers represent
The mean (average) income of the top one percent in each state, rather than the lowest income needed to make the cutoff.
I could be wrong, but Ive seen a lot of these graphics and they often are mislabeled.

(36,213 posts)2. You're probably right, this is a hook to get response from the newsletter readers
Mainly they want to get people to download their app. Once their app is on your phone, I'm sure they have a lot more stuff to share with readers while they sell your data to the advertisers.
